Disney making Lionel Richie musical as singer teases ‘big things in the works’ [Photo: Courtesy]

Walt Disney Studios is developing a musical film based on the music of Lionel Richie.

The new project is currently titled All Night Long will be in a live-action format and is being eyed for a theatrical release.

Variety revealed that Cavalry Media executives Dana Brunetti and Matt Del Piano will produce the film along with Richie himself and manager Bruce Eskowitz.

The script is also set to be written by Crazy Rich Asians screenwriter Pete Chiarelli.

Richie is already working with Disney at ABC Studios on the current season of music talent show American Idol on which he is a judge.

The 70-year-old music icon teased the project by sharing Variety’s piece on Twitter.

The singer tweeted: “Big things in the works!”

He has already won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for Say You See Me that was heard in the 1986 film White Nights.

Lionel also has sold 100 million records worldwide and has four Grammy Awards.

The Stuck On You star certainly left his fans excited by sharing news of the upcoming film, which is set to have a jukebox style akin to what the Mamma Mia films did with the song of Swedish band ABBA.

One fan replied to Lionel’s tweet: “This is the best part of 2020 so far! I cannot wait for this @LionelRichie “.

Another follower also wrote: “How much I love this news! It’s time the new generation discovered one of my favourite artistes and learned to fall in love with love, all over again, this time, musically.”

Meanwhile, a different Twitter user noted: “Congratulations Lionel!! This is going to be amazing! Your work deserves to be celebrated – this is a great way to do that! #LoveLionel#AllNightLong “.

Elsewhere, one viewer tweeted: “Bravo Lionel! Congrats. Can’t wait to see it. You deserve the recognition.”

Finally, one Lionel Richie fan conclued: “Excellent news. Yep. @LionelRichie is an American Treasure.”
